Jet Airliner
Tu-104
Tupolev · USSR
Based on the Tu-16 bomber, the Tu-104 brought the Soviet Union into the jet age with brute force. While its handling was difficult and it required a parachute to help it stop on landing, it carried over 100,000 passengers before the Boeing 707 even entered service.
Legacy Fact: It shocked the West by arriving at London Heathrow in 1956, proving Soviet jet parity.
