Saab · Sweden
JAS stands for Jakt (Air-to-Air), Attack (Air-to-Surface), and Spaning (Reconnaissance). The Gripen was the first jet designed to switch between these three roles mid-mission with the flip of a switch. It was also designed for "Bas 90" operations—taking off from snowy Swedish highways.
