Designed by the legendary Kelly Johnson at the Skunk Works, the U-2 was built to fly at altitudes above 70,000 feet to photograph Soviet installations. It is essentially a jet-powered glider with a massive wingspan, and it remains in service today for specialized high-altitude research and reconnaissance.
