Airbus · Europe
Designed for very long flights over oceans where airlines still felt nervous about twin-engine jets, the A340 provided extreme range. However, as twin-engine reliability increased, its four engines became a liability due to high fuel costs.
Legacy Fact: It allowed for ultra-long-haul routes, but was eventually outpaced by the more efficient A330 and 777.
