The Outsiders
By Unknown Author
According to Ponyboy, there are two kinds of people in the world: greasers and socs. A soc (short for "social") has money, can get away with just about anything, and has an attitude longer than a limousine. A greaser, on the other hand, always lives on the outside and needs to watch his back. Ponyboy is a greaser, and he's always been proud of it, even willing to rumble against a gang of socs for the sake of his fellow greasers--until one terrible night when his friend Johnny kills a soc. The murder gets under Ponyboy's skin, causing his world to crumble and teaching him that pain feels the same whether a soc or a greaser. ([source][1]) [1]: http://www.sehinton.com/books/

Rosencrantz & Guildenstern are dead
By Unknown Author
Acclaimed as a modern dramatic masterpiece, Rosencrantz & Guildenstern are Dead is the fabulously inventive tale of Hamlet as told from the worm’s-eve view of the bewildered Rosencrantz and Guildenstern, two minor characters in Shakespeare’s play. In Tom Stoppard’s best-known work, this Shakespearean Laurel and Hardy finally get a chance to take the lead role, but do so in a world where echoes of Waiting for Godot resound, where reality and illusion intermix, and where fate leads our two heroes to a tragic but inevitable end.
La Société du spectacle
By Unknown Author
Few works of political and cultural theory have been as enduringly provocative as Guy Debord's The Society of the Spectacle. From its publication amid the social upheavals of the 1960s up to the present, the volatile theses of this book have decisively transformed debates on the shape of modernity, capitalism and everyday life in the late twentieth cenlury. Now finally available in a superb English translation approved by the author, Debord's text remains as crucial as ever for understanding the contemporary effects of power, which are increasingly inseparable from the new virtual worlds of our rapidly changing image/information culture.

Libro de los seres imaginarios
By Unknown Author
The master, writing with sometime collaborator Guerrero, compiled 82 one- and two-page descriptions of everything from "The Borametz" (a Chinese "plant shaped like a lamb, covered with golden fleece") to "The Simurgh" ("an immortal bird that makes its nest in the tree of science") and "The Zaratan" (a particularly cunning whale) in An Anthology of Fantastic Zoology in 1954. He added 34 more (and illustrations) for a 1967 edition, giving it the present title, and it was published in English in 1969. This edition, with fresh translations from Borges's Collected Fictions translator Hurley, and new illustrations from Caldecott-winner Sis, gives the beings new life. They prove the perfect foils for classic Borgesian musings on everything from biblical etymology to the underworld, giving the creatures particularly (and, via Sis, whimsically) vivid and perfectly scaled shape. "We do not know what the dragon means, just as we do not know the meaning of the universe," Borges (1899-1986) and Guerrero write in a preface, and the genius of this book is that it seems to easily contain the latter within it.

Calculus
By Unknown Author
Spivak's celebrated textbook is widely held as one of the finest introductions to mathematical analysis. His aim is to present calculus as the first real encounter with mathematics: it is the place to learn how logical reasoning combined with fundamental concepts can be developed into a rigorous mathematical theory rather than a bunch of tools and techniques learned by rote. Since analysis is a subject students traditionally find difficult to grasp, Spivak provides leisurely explanations, a profusion of examples, a wide range of exercises and plenty of illustrations in an easy-going approach that enlightens difficult concepts and rewards effort. Calculus will continue to be regarded as a modern classic, ideal for honours students and mathematics majors, who seek an alternative to doorstop textbooks on calculus, and the more formidable introductions to real analysis.

Feminine Psychology
By Unknown Author
"Because the role of woman as a contributing member of society comes increasingly under scrutiny, Karen Horney's thoughts and theories about feminine psychology are particularly relevant to our day. In this new collection of papers, many previously unavailable in English, Karen Horney brings to the subject of femininity both profound knowledge of women and dedicated skill as a therapist. As a psychoanalytic pioneer who trained at the Berlin Psychoanalytic Institute in the 1920's, Dr. Horney began to question certain of Freud's theories, especially his libido theory, which her own careful clinical observations seems to contradict. At the same time her reading in anthropology strengthened her feeling that an organism's behavior is determined culturally as well as biologically. A male-oriented, materialistic society, such as the one into which Freud was born, would evolve theories of separate male and female psychologies. In such a society a woman's outlook on life would appear to be determined by her envy of the male sex organ. According to Dr. Horney, what woman really envies are masculine attributes and the opportunities society offers more readily to men. In this book her discussion of such subjects as frigidity, the problem of monogamy, maternal conflicts, feminine masochism, and the neurotic need for love offers valuable insights into the problems confronting women today - the problesm taht they bring to psychiatrists, marriage counselors, and clergymen."--Publisher's description.

And brooding Uncle Philip loves only the life-sized wooden puppets he creates in his toyshop. The Stranger at the Pentagon
By Unknown Author
The Stranger at the Pentagon, by Dr. Frank Stranges, a theologian, psychologist, and criminologist who also happens to be the founder of a national committee dedicated to the investigation of UFOs, is an astonishing account -- complete with photos -- of an "alien" landing in Virginia in the year of 1957. According to his account, the ship was captained by an extra-terrestrial named "Valiant Thor," who came with guidance and instructions for our planet in its post-nuclear era. Commander "Val" allegedly remained for three years, as a guest of the Pentagon, and spoke to various members of the Eisenhower administration, including then-Vice President Richard Nixon, who apparently greeted him with the quip, "You certainly have caused a stir -- for an out-of-towner." The information contained in Strangers' account was supposedly classified, although much of it is available in other classic accounts of alien sightings/encounters following the explosion of the first atomic bomb in New Mexico in 1945. Stranger's story coheres with the claim that President Kennedy was assassinated in order to prevent him from exposing the military cover-up to the public, and also with the claim that as president, Nixon was poised to stake his place in history by disclosing all he knew just before the Watergate scandal pre-empted both his statement and any credibility that it might have carried. After three years, alien Val's invitation to reside at a sumptuous, Pentagon-based suite expired, and he was requested to go back to his own planet. According to the author, he nevertheless returned to earth many times, and personally oversees many others like him who continue to infiltrate and observe our planet. The author also claims to have visited one of their spacecraft, and relays the information he has learned from them in an earnest, straightforward manner infused with the religion he claims that they share. It goes without saying that we need to keep an extremely open mind about this last point especially, but if there are extra-terrestrials, there is no reason to assume that they would be any less religious than "earthlings." And given that the extra-terrestrial described here was tasked with infiltrating our society, it seems reasonable to assume that he would couch his knowledge -- which after all defies the laws of physics as we know them -- in terms that his audience could understand. What cannot be disputed is that the factual information conveyed here coheres nicely with accounts from hard-line World War 2 Army Air Force pilots, engineers, and scientists of the era, and is equally fascinating. The photos, also, are compelling.

A grain of wheat
By Unknown Author
The works of Kenyan author Ngugi have made a powerful impact throughout the world. A Grain of Wheat was recognised as one of Africa's 100 best books of the twentieth century in an initiative organised by the Zimbabwe International Book Fair. The central action in this novel by Ngugi wa Thiong'o takes place in December of 1963 in a village in Kenya that is preparing for the coming of Uhuru (Independence). However, the plot is non-linear, with a wealth of flashbacks and various twists and turns. There are also multiple storylines which are well-woven into a fascinating tapestry. The main story is indeed the coming of Independence Day, part of which involves identifying the person who betrayed Kihika, one of the leading freedom fighters from the village. Many of the flashbacks along this storyline involve the fight for freedom as well as details about what occurred in the detention camps. Another prominent storyline is that involving a love triangle between Mumbi and her two suitors, Gikonyo and Karanja. A third intriguing storyline involves Mugo, a man whom everyone recognizes as different yet feels drawn to. Ngugi portrays his inner conflict masterfully, especially in using biblical allusions to both Moses and Judas in relation to Mugo."--Www.mouthshut.com (Oct. 22, 2010).

Writing research papers
By Unknown Author
The topic of a research paper may often be one which, at least initially, you know very little about. At first the task may appear insurmountable: sources to be located, books and articles to be read, notetaking, footnoting of source material, outlining of the paper, writing, rewriting, typing, and proofreading. Perhaps at this point you will begin to question your ability to express yourself in English at all! Obviously, some kind of orderly process must be applied to the above procedure. This book will help you do that: it outlines the basic research techniques you will need.

SCUM Manifesto
By Unknown Author
"SCUM Manifesto was considered one of the most outrageous, violent, and certifiably crazy tracts when it first appeared in 1968. Valerie Solanas, the woman who shot Andy Warhol, self-published this work just before her rampage against the king of Pop Art made her a household name and resulted in her confinement to a mental institution. But the Manifesto, for all its vitriol, is impossible to dismiss as just the rantings of a lesbian lunatic. In fact, the work has prescience, not only as a radical feminist analysis light-years ahead of its time - predicting artificial insemination, ATMs, a feminist uprising against under-representation in the arts - but also as a testament to the rage of an abused and destitute woman." "The focus of this edition, however, is not on the nostalgic appeal of SCUM. Rather, Avital Ronell reconsiders Solanas's infamous text in light of the social milieu in which it was written, and reinterprets its status as a cult classic. Ronell writes, "Maybe the Solanas tract was payback: it was clocked to strike the time of response to all shameless woman-hating manifestos and their counterparts, the universalizers." She conjures Derrida's "The Ends of Man" (written in the same year), Judith Butler's Excitable Speech, Nietzsche's Ubermensch, and notorious feminist icons from Medusa, Medea, and Antigone, to Lizzie Borden, Lorenna Bobbitt, and Aileen Wournos, illuminating the evocative exuberance of Solana's dark tract."--Jacket.

The ghost in the machine
By Unknown Author
The Ghost in the Machine is a work in philosophical psychology published in 1967. The title is a phrase coined by the Oxford philosopher Gilbert Ryle to describe the Cartesian dualist account of the mind–body relationship. Koestler shares with Ryle the view that the mind of a person is not an independent non-material entity, temporarily inhabiting and governing the body. One of the book's central concepts is that as the human brain evolved, it retained and built upon earlier, more primitive brain structures. The work attempts to explain humanity's tendency towards self-destruction in terms of brain structure, philosophies, and its overarching, cyclical political–historical dynamics, reaching the height of its potential in the nuclear arms arena. Note: Although he appropriated Ryle's phrase for his title and shared some of his views, Koestler had a pretty low opinion of Ryle himself -- he dismissed him as a 'snickering' Oxford don with no knowledge of any of the sciences that would have given his ideas more weight. Ryle nevertheless had the philosopher's gift for analogy, and used a number of metaphors for the mind-body problem, all of which could have supplied titles: they included 'the sealed signal box', 'the two parallel theatres' and 'the horse in the locomotive'.

The Third Policeman
By Unknown Author
The Third Policeman is Flann O'Brien's brilliantly dark comic novel about the nature of time, death, and existence. Told by a narrator who has committed a botched robbery and brutal murder, the novel follows him and his adventures in a two-dimensional police station where, through the theories of the scientist/philosopher de Selby, he is introduced to "Atomic Theory" and its relation to bicycles, the existence of eternity (which turns out to be just down the road), and de Selby's view that the earth is not round but "sausage-shaped." With the help of his newly found soul named "Joe," he grapples with the riddles and contradictions that three eccentric policeman present to him. The last of O'Brien's novels to be published, The Third Policeman joins O'Brien's other fiction (At Swim-Two-Birds, The Poor Mouth, The Hard Life, The Best of Myles, The Dalkey Archive) to ensure his place, along with James Joyce and Samuel Beckett, as one of Ireland's great comic geniuses.

Por Estas Calles Bravas
By Unknown Author
Thirty years ago Piri Thomas made literary history with this lacerating, lyrical memoir of his coming of age on the streets of Spanish Harlem. Here was the testament of a born outsider: a Puerto Rican in English-speaking America; a dark-skinned morenito in a family that refused to acknowledge its African blood. Here was an unsparing document of Thomas's plunge into the deadly consolations of drugs, street fighting, and armed robbery--a descent that ended when the twenty-two-year-old Piri was sent to prison for shooting a cop. As he recounts the journey that took him from adolescence in El Barrio to a lock-up in Sing Sing to the freedom that comes of self-acceptance, faith, and inner confidence, Piri Thomas gives us a book that is as exultant as it is harrowing and whose every page bears the irrepressible rhythm of its author's voice. Thirty years after its first appearance, this classic of manhood, marginalization, survival, and transcendence is available in a new edition.
