Battle of Dien Bien Phu

Location: Vietnam

The French military attempted to lure the Viet Minh into a set-piece battle in a valley. However, the Viet Minh managed to haul heavy artillery onto the surrounding mountains, trapping the French in a "slaughterhouse" that ended their rule in Indochina.

Historical Lesson

"The French mistake was "Arrogance of Logistics." They assumed the Viet Minh could not transport heavy artillery through the jungle. This failure fundamentally changed the map of Southeast Asia."

Historical Lesson

"France failed to learn from their defeat in Vietnam just months earlier. By refusing to grant political rights to Algerians in 1951, they ensured that the only remaining path to independence was total war."

On January 1, 1959, Fulgencio Batista fled the country. Castros forces entered Havana shortly after, establishing a new revolutionary government that would soon align with the Soviet Union.
